About Persian Cats

Popular for their long, flowing coats and open pansy-like faces, Persian cats are perennially the nation’s most popular feline breed. Persian kittens were first introduced to Europeans during the 16th century by Turkish traders. Known for their beautiful long hair, docile temperament and lap cat personalities, the breed rapidly became a favorite throughout Europe and North America. Extremely loyal and incredibly playful throughout their lives, even in their mature years, these beautiful animals make perfect pets.

Their sweet, gentle personalities and ability to adapt easily to most households make them ideal pets. Persians prefer security and serenity, however with love and reassurance, the breed can be comfortable even in the most boisterous of households. Their quiet, melodious voices are pleasant, and their large, expressive eyes make them charming pets.

Persians have short, large-boned legs to support their broad, short bodies. They like to have their feet firmly planted and are not given to high jumping and climbing. Persians love to play but are rarely aggressive or demanding. They love to pose and are known to quickly adopt favorite windows or chairs where they perch and nap. Persian cats are responsive and are well known for their enduring affection.

There are seven Persian color classes that are recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA): solid colors, bicolor, calico, tabby, silver and golden, shaded and smoke and Himalayan.
